The day D Foster enters Neeka and her best friend’s lives, the world opens up for them. Suddenly they’re keenly aware of things beyond their block in Queens, things that are happening in the world—like the shooting of Tupac Shakur—and in search of their Big Purpose in life. When—all too soon—D’s mom swoops in to reclaim her, and Tupac dies, they are left with a sense of how quickly things can change and how even all-too-brief connections can touch deeply.

When I first saw this book I thought it would be all about Tupac and his struggles through life, but, boy was I wrong. This book tells a story about three girls: the nameless narrator, Neeka, and D Foster. As a boy reading this, I think I would enjoy the book a lot more if I was a girl, because it is all about growing up from the ages of 11 through 13 through girl’s eyes. Neeka and the narrator were always best friends, but then D Foster moves into their life to shows them how to have a good time and live on the dangerous side. The one thing all these girls had in common was that they all loved Tupac. They thrived off his songs and music videos. When the girls heard that Tupac had been shot and killed they were crushed. If I had to rate this book I would give it three stars out of five stars. I would recommend this book to my friends that love a good story about friends bonding and experiencing some ones else’s life. This book really makes you think about life and how you’re living it.
