Famously kidnapped at age six, Kick Lannigan captured America's hearts when she was rescued five years later. Now 21, she finds herself unexpectedly entangled in a missing child case that will put her talents to the test. Trained as a marksman, lock picker, escape artist, and bomb maker by her abductor, Kick could not return to the life of the average young girl after her release. So, in lieu of therapy, she mastered martial arts, boxing, and knife throwing and learned how to escape from the trunk of a car, jimmy a pair of handcuffs, and walk without making a sound — all before age 13. Kick has trained herself to be safe. But then two children go missing in three weeks. With lives hanging in the balance, Kick is set to be the crusader she has always imagined herself to be. A heart-stopping, entertaining thrill ride, One Kick (Simon & Schuster) announces the arrival of a blistering new series by Chelsea Cain, author of the critically acclaimed Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell thrillers.

Publisher Comments:

Detective Archie Sheridan just has to get through the next few days, then his birthday and Halloween will be over. But with escaped serial killer Gretchen Lowell on the loose, the investigation into the murder of a DEA agent demanding his attention, and journalist Susan Ward showing up at his apartment needing a favor, its going to be a long weekend.

Soon Archie finds himself crashing a masked ball on a private island owned by Jack Reynolds, a notorious local drug kingpin. By morning, Archie is back on pain killers, a guest is dead and Archie quickly realizes that little is what it seems. One thing is clear: Gretchen is back, and Archie's nemesis and sometimes lover has something special in mind for the birthday boy, something she's been planning for a long, long time. On Halloween Eve, with time running out, and the life of someone close to Archie on the line, Archie knows his only chance is to give Gretchen exactly what she wants. But Gretchen will prove more horrifying, and unpredictable, than Archie could ever imagine.

Back with her most thrilling novel yet, Chelsea Cain delivers the pinnacle of what fans of this series have come to expect: sex, murder, twists, dark wit, and some of the best characters in the genre.

Synopsis:

Beautiful killer Gretchen Lowell tightens her grip on Detective Archie Sheridan in Let Me Go, New York Times bestseller Chelsea Cain's newest nail-biter.

Detective Archie Sheridan is about to receive a birthday present from the last person he ever wants to see again: Gretchen Lowell.

The investigation into Jack Reynolds's drug enterprise is heating up and has Archie heading off to attend a masked Halloween party on Jack Reynolds's island, where Susan is a reluctant guest. But the next morning one of the guests is found murdered, and Archie quickly realizes that nothing is what it seems. Only one thing is clear: Gretchen is back, and she's been closer than anyone thinks. On Halloween Eve, with time running out, Archie will have to risk everything, and choose wisely whom to trust, if he and his loved ones are going to live through the night.

I was fortunate enough to receive an ARC copy from Goodreads.

This was my first foray into the Archie Sheridan/Gretchen Lowell series so I was a little lost at the very beginning - trying to sort out the characters and what their relationships are (and who the heck is this Gretchen everyone keeps mentioning......). This story gives you enough background to catch up on what you have missed without seeming like it has to rehash the previous 5 books.

The characters are real and complex. The story is fantastic and carries itself at a nice clip, not too slow that you start to get bored but no fast that it seems like the author is skipping stuff and rushing you to the end.

The supporting role Gretchen Lowell plays is sublime. They way she can manipulate everyone and everything around her is genius. Her emotional complexity, from her psychopathic obsession to sadistic manipulation to oddly placed humanity was so well written that it never felt forced or out of character. Chelsea Cain has managed to write a female serial killer, a stereotypical masculine role, that has more sex appeal than Marilyn herself.

I also Love that this is set in Portland and that I recognized so much in the book (yesterday I passed the Dancing Bare and laughed out loud). I will be rushing out to get the previous 5 books to start this saga from the beginning.
