"I fell in love with Crosby, Stills, and Nash's song 'Southern Cross' when I was fifteen. By the time I got to college, 'I'm going to sail around the world someday' was sort of my pickup line." Continue »

Un Lun Dun Cover

Review-a-Day   (What is Review-a-Day?)

"Un Lun Dun doesn't have the breathless otherness and depth of Perdido Street Station, but it isn't intended to....Un Lun Dun is a nice little morsel that makes a great chaser after a dense nonfiction book, and is a good recommendation for someone who has already read Philip Pullman's fabulous His Dark Materials series (and those books about the boy wizard)." Publisher Comments:

What is Un Lun Dun?

It is London through the looking glass, an urban Wonderland of strange delights where all the lost and broken things of London end up...and some of its lost and broken people, too — including Brokkenbroll, boss of the broken umbrellas; Obaday Fing, a tailor whose head is an enormous pin-cushion, and an empty milk carton called Curdle. Un Lun Dun is a place where words are alive, a jungle lurks behind the door of an ordinary house, carnivorous giraffes stalk the streets, and a dark cloud dreams of burning the world. It is a city awaiting its hero, whose coming was prophesied long ago, set down for all time in the pages of a talking book.

When twelve-year-old Zanna and her friend Deeba find a secret entrance leading out of London and into this strange city, it seems that the ancient prophecy is coming true at last. But then things begin to go shockingly wrong.

Review:

"[A] dark, charming, robust, comical adventure played according to new rules." VOYA

Review:

"The characters are well realized and the book has a fair amount of sociopolitical subtext, mostly about questioning the status quo and thinking for oneself." Library Journal

Review:

"Mieville's compelling heroine and her fantastical journey through the labyrinth of a strange London forms that rare book that feels instantly like a classic and yet is thoroughly modern." Holly Black, bestselling author of the YA novels Tithe and Valiant

Review:

"A book which shows the world as it truly is: full of marvels and monsters and unexpected opportunities for heroism and magic. Un Lun Dun is delicious, twisty, ferocious fun, a book so crammed with inventions, delights, and unexpected turns that you will want to start reading it over again as soon as you've reached the end." Kelly Link, author of Stranger Things Happen and Magic for Beginners

Review:

"Many young readers will no doubt find the adventure compelling....In a way, the novel feels like a screenplay, ready to have its delightful ideas translated to the purely visual." Philadelphia Inquirer

Review:

"Mieville can spin just about anything into fantastic silk, but he doesn't seem to understand that the kids who read YA books are smart and resilient." Los Angeles Times

I really enjoyed Un Lun Dun, great plays on words and a really interesting world! It's an imaginative reminder to think about all the rubbish in the world and where it's going.

A rich and delightful book that's full of unexpected twists and turns. Un Lun Dun is where lost things go and two girls, Zanna and Deeba, end up there one strange night in fulfillment of an ancient prophecy. While it owes a debt to such wonderful books as Alice in Wonderland and Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and Coraline, Un Lun Dun is a uniquely original where objects such as umbrellas and milk cartons have a life of their own. While it was written for young readers, this book will appeal to readers of all ages.
