I love drinking wine but have always felt a little overwhelmed when choosing a bottle. Notes of pepper with a smoky finish? What does that even mean? After reading (and scratching) through Master Sommelier Richard Betts's approachable scratch-and-sniff board book, I now feel like a verifiable vino expert.

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Richard Betts is one of fewer than two hundred master sommeliers in the world, but hes no wine snob and he hates wine-speak. In the first book of its kind, he helps readers scratch and sniff their way to expertise by introducing the basic components of wine — the fruits, the wood, the earth — enabling anyone to discover the difference between a Syrah and a Sangiovese and get the glass they love every time. Humorously illustrated, with 16 scents, this irresistible gift puts the fun back in wine fundamentals.

Review:

"Smart, fun, enlightening, and refreshingly free of snobbery." Real Simple

Review:

"The master sommelier Richard Betts's clever new scratch-and-sniff book is likely to broaden the novice's appreciation of wine, explaining how aromas relate to different varietals....A useful chart that ties bouquets to wines is tucked inside." Florence Fabricant for The New York Times

Review:

"Fiendishly clever." Food & Wine

Synopsis:

A Master Sommelier introduces the basics of wine through scratch-and-sniff stickers.

A winner under the tree this morning - gave it to my son who really does know wines - he loved the book, and it passed muster with him! Love it, and I learned some things as I read it while wrapping. thumbs up.

Book of Kells, December 13, 2013 (view all comments by Book of Kells)
This book was a gift for friends, but I had to check it out before I wrapped it. It is easy to read and use as a guide to learn more about wine. Betts wants everyone to enjoy wine, and says that "Wine is grocery, not a luxury." When my friends unwrapped the book, they were surprised at the scratch & sniff element, but amused, too. They thought it was a fun approach to what can be a somewhat complex topic. They were looking forward to exploring their tastes.
