A Shadow Falls

by Nick Brandt and Peter Singer and Vicki Goldberg

A Shadow Falls Cover

Staff Pick

A Shadow Falls is the most gorgeous book I've seen this year. Brandt's photographs of animals are evocative and emotional, and this oversized book will make a stunning gift for anyone interested in art, ecology, or the natural world.

Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis:

Nick Brandt's unforgettable photographs in A Shadow Falls, a much anticipated collection of new work created since the publication of his enormously successful On this Earth (2005), portray the great animals of East Africa. Brandt comes to lions, elephants, giraffes, and gorillas with the same empathy that other artists reserve for human subjects. His photographs, writes Jane Goodall, arouse deep emotions. It's almost impossible to look through his work without sensing the personalities of the beings whom he has photographed. Out of this yearning for communion with our closest relatives in nature, Brandt achieves images that are, in the words of photographer Mary Ellen Mark, both Oepic and iconic. A Shadow Falls reproduces 58 never before published images in stunning, oversized tritone plates. Philosopher Peter Singer and photography historian Vicki Goldberg explore the significance of Brandt's photographs, and Brandt gives his own account of his work in Africa.

Synopsis:

In A Shadow Falls, which features fifty-eight recent images in stunning, oversized tritone plates, Nick Brandt continues his ambitious and ongoing photographic project to memorialize the vanishing natural grandeur of East Africa. Brandt's wide-screen panoramas of animals and landscapes capture an epic vision of Africa that has not been seen before. His iconic portraits of its majestic animals are filled with an empathy usually reserved for human subjects.

From the opening images in A Shadow Falls, of a verdant world filled with multitudes of animals, to the closing images of small bands of creatures moving across a parched, dusty earth, Brandt portrays a mythic Africa struggling against tragic forces. In years to come, we will look back at these powerful photographs and wonder why humanity did not do more to preserve this rare corner of earthly paradise.
