Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Galileo has been termed by Einstein "the father of modern science."  Why that is so is the main burden of  The Achievement of Galileo.  Included in this volume are not only selections from his own works, full of the thrill and pride of discovery, but also assessments of his achievement by both his contemporaries and modern physicists like Philip Frank and Morris R. Cohen.  This volume answers the urgent need to effect a better understanding between our scientific and nonscientific communities.

Book News Annotation:

Paolucci's idiosyncratic selection of readings on the Galileo- Copernicus controversy, published originally in 1962, is presented in a new edition with additional material translated and edited by Brophy (emeritus, English, Iona College). Translated excerpts are from the writing of Galileo and a diverse selection of other writers on the topic of Galileo's attachment to Copernican astronomy. Some of the selections include prefatory material; there is no index. Paolucci taught political science, government, ancient and modern philosophy at St. John's U. Distributed by Griffon House Publications.
