Above Portlandby Bruce Forster and Chet Orloff
Finally, my fantasy of seeing Portland from the air is fulfilled! Not by riding in a traffic copter, as I'd imagined, but by turning the pages of this gorgeous book. Celebrated Oregon photographer Bruce Forster's low-level aerial photos (including a few paired with historical photographs of the same view) are complemented by detailed captions, providing a lesson in Portland's history courtesy of none other than Chet Orloff, former director of the Oregon Historical Society. The experience is fleshed out with essays by local gurus on sustainability, green Portland, transportation, and urban planning. The photos are up-to-the minute, including, for example, the new home of Saturday Market and the South Waterfront development. Ladd's Addition from the air is not to be missed! Above Portland presents, as never before, the area's bridges, parks, ports, golf courses, and that rarely-seen feature of modern Portland, eco-roofs. Moving further afield, we see the stark delineation of the urban growth boundary, soar over the rich farmland of the Willamette Valley to the south, Vancouver and environs to the north, and the high-tech campuses of Washington County. Further west, we are treated to a couple of stunning views of the coast, without which no book on the Portland area would be complete. This valuable book is more than a collection of pretty pictures: it provides a comprehensive experience of Portland from a perspective most of us rarely enjoy. Warning: if you buy it as a gift, you won't be able to resist peeking inside, so be careful not to leave fingerprints! Or just buy two.
Synopses & Reviews
Through the stunning aerial photography of Bruce Forster, Above Portland offers a unique and beautiful perspective on the picturesque region of Portland, Oregon and its surrounding areas. Flying high and low, the images take the reader on a memorable journey over all that the Portland region has to offer — the bustling downtown and its world-renowned green architecture, the romantic Columbia and Willamette Rivers, the charming neighborhoods, the internationally admired transportation system, wine country, and mountains — all of which come alive when viewed from above.
Along with the dramatic aerial photography, Above Portland features six topical essays written by local historians and experts — essays on the history, architecture, urban planning, transportation and sustainability of Portland. Woven together with the breathtaking photography, these essays form a collaborative local voice, paying tribute to Portland and illuminating the many reasons it is a model for cities around the world.
