Warm Bodiesby Isaac Marion
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Now in paperback, a debut novel about a zombie who yearns for a better life and ends up falling in love — with a human.
R” is a zombie. He has no memories, no identity, and no pulse, but he has dreams. He doesn’t enjoy killing people; he enjoys riding escalators and listening to Frank Sinatra. He is a little different from his fellow Dead. Wandering the ruins of civilization in search of food, R meets a girl. Her name is Julie and she is the opposite of everything he knows — warm and bright and very much alive, Julie is a blast of color in a dreary gray landscape, she is more than just meat, and something in R begins to shift. He finds he doesn’t want to eat Julie, although she looks delicious. He wants to protect her, no matter what the consequences. This choice is a spark in the grass. It breaks the rules and defies logic, but R is no longer content with life in the grave. He wants to breathe again, he wants to live, and Julie wants to help him. But their grim, rotting world won’t change without a fight... Not just another zombie novel, Warm Bodies is funny, scary, and deeply moving. Synopsis:R is a young man with an existential crisis--he is a zombie. He shuffles through an America destroyed by war, social collapse, and the mindless hunger of his undead comrades, but he craves something more than blood and brains. He can speak just a few grunted syllables, but his inner life is deep, full of wonder and longing. He has no memories, noidentity, and no pulse, but he has dreams.
After experiencing a teenage boy's memories while consuming his brain, R makes an unexpected choice that begins a tense, awkward, and stragely sweet relationship with the victim's human girlfriend. Julie is a blast of color in the otherwise dreary and gray landscape that surrounds R. His decision to protect her will transform not only R, but his fellow Dead, and perhaps their whole lifeless world. Scary, funny, and surprisingly poignant, Warm Bodies is about being alive, being dead, and the blurry line in between.
