Settlers is one of those games that makes you realize that you actually do like board games. Easy to learn, but with a lot of depth, Settlers of Catan is fun for the whole family or a close group of friends. The object of the game is to conquer Catan. But to do this, you must work both cooperatively and competitively with (and against) your fellow Settlers, by trading resources to build roads, armies, settlements, and cities. The first to 10 victory points is the winner. It's a great introduction to the wonderful world of tabletop games.

Publisher Comments:

Players are recent immigrants to the newly populated island of Catan. Expand your colony through the building of settlements, roads, and villages by harvesting commodities from the land around you. Trade sheep, lumber, bricks and grain for a settlement, bricks and wood for a road, or try to complete other combinations for more advanced buildings, services and specials.

Trade with other players, or at local seaports to get resources you might lack. The first player to achieve 10 points from a combination of roads, settlements, and special cards wins.

There are essentially two board games that every serious gamer needs in their library: Settlers of Catan and Ticket To Ride. Those two games are the "new" replacements for games like Monopoly or Life. Settlers of Catan is just a fantastic game where players are competing to build settlements and cities on a newly inhabited island. Easy to learn and lots of strategy and because the board is made up of hexagonal tiles that you place at random, the game is different each time. Plus, there are expansions that add other islands and lands for completely new experiences. The base game is for up to four players and you can buy expansions that allow for up to six.

I love strategy games, but in many of them it seems as if it is forever until you can make a move. Settlers of Catan is different because each roll can help you collect supplies which can help you win the game. This was a hit over a family Christmas and one night we stayed up until three in the morning finishing a game. Few games can keep my attention that late at night, and this one will be a favorite for years to come!

Everyone our house -- ages 12 to 63 -- loves this game, even the "not so much" gamers. It's a friendly competition to settle as much of the land as you can, cooperation sometimes being key, sometimes not. It's complicated enough to keep us all on our toes, and the wood and sheep jokes (mentioned below) just keep on coming. We play plenty of board games; this one is our favorite.
