Players are recent immigrants to the newly populated island of Catan. Expand your colony through the building of settlements, roads, and villages by harvesting commodities from the land around you. Trade sheep, lumber, bricks and grain for a settlement, bricks and wood for a road, or try to complete other combinations for more advanced buildings, services and specials.

Trade with other players, or at local seaports to get resources you might lack. The first player to achieve 10 points from a combination of roads, settlements, and special cards wins.

About the Author

Mayfair Games is a publisher of board, card, and roleplaying games. They also license German-style board games and publish them in English throughout the world.

Klaus Teuber is a German designer of board games. He won the Spiel des Jahres award four times, for The Settlers of Catan, Barbarossa, Drunter und Drüber and Adel Verpflichtet. He retired from his profession as a dental technician to become a full-time game designer in 1999. As of 2007, he lives in Darmstadt with his wife Claudia. They have two sons, Guido and Benny.[1]

Everyone our house -- ages 12 to 63 -- loves this game, even the "not so much" gamers. It's a friendly competition to settle as much of the land as you can, cooperation sometimes being key, sometimes not. It's complicated enough to keep us all on our toes, and the wood and sheep jokes (mentioned below) just keep on coming. We play plenty of board games; this one is our favorite.

I would consider myself a tabletop gamer, and this is by far my favorite tabletop game. We play with gamer and non gamer friends alike. Immerse yourself into the world of Catan, where you are competing to be the most successful settler, and revel in the endless sheep and wood jokes. All the competitiveness of Monopoly but your more likely to leave the table still speaking to your friends.
