If Carl Hiaasen set one of his novels on a residential stretch of boundary line between British Columbia and Washington, or if Richard Russo's characters had relatives in the Pacific Northwest, the result might be something like Jim Lynch's Border Songs. Continue »

Of course I'd rate it 5 -- I published it. The book is a collection of essays, newspaper articles, personal accounts, short stories and poems which address the devastation of the Appalachian Mountains by mountaintop removal coal mining. Much of eastern Kentucky and West Virginia is being converted into a vast wasteland by this environmentally irresponsible method of extracting coal. Half the electricity in the US is generated from the burning of coal. The reader will come away from this book with a better understanding of the true cost of cheap electricity.
