The Man in the High Castle is one of the first and best "alternate history" novels ever published. Turtledove and Flint should both have altars to Philip K. Dick in their homes.

Publisher Comments:

It's America in 1962. Slavery is legal once again. The few Jews who still survive hide under assumed names. In San Francisco the I Ching is as common as the Yellow Pages. All because some 20 years earlier the United States lost a war — and is now occupied jointly by Nazi Germany and Japan.

This harrowing, Hugo Award-winning novel is the work that established Philip K. Dick as an innovator in science fiction while breaking the barrier between science fiction and the serious novel of ideas. In it Dick offers a haunting vision of history as a nightmare from which it may just be possible to awake.

Quite an amazing read, even though I did not have particularly high expectations going in. In what almost any other book would take 600 pages to cover, this does in less than 260. A ton of heady concepts are covered or at least brought into focus yet it never feels like any of it is being shoehorned in; it all feels organic to the world/universe that it inhabits. It is difficult to be more specific than that because it is really not something you want to have dictated to you. It's all about the individual journey. Definitely not light reading, either, but so, so worth it.
