Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This is a splendid memoir, an affectionate and unvarnished recollection of the life of one of America's best-loved writers today. Beginning with his upbringing in Depression-era Oklahoma, this book spans Hillerman's tour of duty in France in World War II, his newspaper career, and his now legendary entry into publishing. Using the gifts of a talented novelist and reporter, Hillerman draws brilliant portrait not just of his life, but of the world around him.

Patrick Michaels, November 30, 2009 (view all comments by Patrick Michaels)
“Seldom Disappointed”, the words of Hillerman’s mother, sums up Hillerman’s memoir that, although not anything like his murder mysteries, is human, humble and candid. Hillerman describes the various fazes of his life. In typical Hillerman fashion, he tells tales with some dialogue of his coming of age, serving in the military, becoming a reporter, a husband, a father of six and a writer. For those interested in his writings, aren’t we all, in the addendum he lists his books and includes little shorts about his experience in writing them. He also tells what it was like on the road selling his books and even his errors. Did you know one of his character's, Jim Chee, jumps into a dialogue when he hadn't entered the room? Fan's such as myself will find this an enjoyable read in the behind the scenes of this author's beginnings and final works.
