Publisher Comments:

Six thousand years ago. Evil stalks the land. Only twelve-year-old Torak and his wolf-cub companion can defeat it. Their journey together takes them through deep forests, across giant glaciers, and into dangers they never imagined.

In this page-turning, original, and spectacularly told adventure story, Torak and Wolf are joined by an incredible cast of characters as they battle to save their world, in this first book in the "Chronicles of Ancient Darkness."

Review:

"It is the middle-grade reader — especially one who favors wildlife and adventure stories?who will find this an excellent journey." Children's Literature

Review:

"Paver's depth of research into the spiritual world of primitive peoples makes this impressive British import, slated to be the first in a six-book series, intriguing and believable." School Library Journal

Synopsis:

The epic journey of boy and wolf begins

Six thousand years ago. Evil stalks the land. According to legend, only twelve-year-old Torak and his wolf-cub companion can defeat it. Their journey together takes them through deep forests, across giant glaciers, and into dangers they never imagined. Torak and Wolf are terrified of their mission. But if they do not battle to save their world, who will?

About the Author

Michelle Paver was born in central Africa, but moved to England as a child. After earning a degree in biochemistry from Oxford University, she became a partner in a London law firm, but eventually gave that up to write full-time.

Chronicles of Ancient Darkness arises from her lifelong passions for animals, anthropology, and the distant past. It was also inspired by her travels in Norway, Lapland, Iceland, and the Carpathian Mountains—and particularly by an encounter with a large bear in a remote valley in Southern California.

I always saw this book at my school library but never bothered to check it out until a friend recommended it. I'm glad he did, because I gobbled this whole series up quickly. The clans in this book resemble Native American tribes, and I love how animals play a huge part in this series as well. Really great series and although it is aimed towards children, do not hesitate to read it if you are older.

A very unique, fun story that will make the book hard to put down at times. It takes place in the Stone Age, using more modern peoples to model the characters after, such as Native Americans, Inuits, and other tribal people that use some of the same techniques used in these times. The way she uses these aspects in her story make it really believable and realistic. The few things that could be improved in this story are fixed in the other books of the series. This book is the first of a six book series that you will wish never had to end.

This is a great book. I truly enjoyed reading this as an adult. I know that I would have loved it as a child. Easy reading but it keeps you guessing. Michelle Paver is an excellent story teller. I will keep reading the series.
