Perfect By: Sara Shepard

Sara Shepard’s Perfect takes a twist is the story of four teenage girls and their everyday lives, hardships, and friendship with each other. Like the other books in the series, it includes details in each of their unique struggles within their friends, family, schoolwork, and romances. This fiction novel includes many topics relatable to teens, as well as suspense and mystery. Perfect, out of all the first three books in the series I felt included the same anticipation as the others, but flowed more smoothly along in your head like a movie. When switching from each character’s perspective, the atmosphere was sometimes very drastic from the last chapter, but the author seemed to word the text in a way that concluded each section moved along with the story effortlessly. Another tool the author uses is she captivates you with each of the characters feelings and mood, which left a strong impression on me after reading. One of the ways the author does this is by using descriptive yet relatable passages: “All the anger that Spencer had held inside for years broke free and flooded her body, making her feel hot, then wet, then shaky. Her insides were so bathed in fury that they were starting to prune.” Another short passage expressing emotions that struck me was, “It felt like fingernails scraping at Spencer’s heart.” These segments and many others I really felt could tap into your emotions and even build anticipation at times, drawing you into the book and keeping you rapidly turning the pages. Although this book includes many suspenseful moments, a huge cliff hanger is left at the end of the book, so only read this if you plan on continuing into the rest of the books. Also, I would not advise reading this book unless you have read the first two books is order; however it does include brief recaps from the previous books as the novel begins. Perfect actually exceeded the expectations I had for it, and will definitely stick in my memory and be a specific book out of the series that I will remember.
