Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

It's murder in Discworld! — which ordinarily is no big deal. But what bothers Watch Commander Sir Sam Vimes is that the unusual deaths of three elderly Ankh-Morporkians do not bear the clean, efficient marks of the Assassins' Guild. An apparent lack of any motive is also quite troubling. All Vimes has are some tracks of white clay and more of those bothersome "clue" things that only serve to muck up an investigation. The anger of a fearful populace is already being dangerously channeled toward the city's small community of golems — the mindless, absurdly industrious creatures of baked clay who can occasionally be found toiling in the city's factories. And certain highly placed personages are using the unrest as an excuse to resurrect a monarchy — which would be bad enough even if the "king" they were grooming wasn't as empty-headed as your typical animated pottery.

Synopsis:

Murder in the Discworld.

A killer is stalking Ankh-Morpork.A grim reaper who belongs to neither the Assassins' Guild nor the Thieves' Guild. A prowling perp who jauntily leaves behind corpses and strange-smelling tracks of curious white clay.

Commander Vimes of the Ankh-Morpork City Guard is determined to stop this unauthorized assassin, and he has hired a Dwarf to help him. With the assistance of the Corporal Cheery Littlebottom, Vimes and his men (and trolls and such) can get to the, well, bottom of anything.

Even when one of the victims is murdered with a loaf of her own Battle Bread (available in convenient throwing slices). Even when the investigation leads to an out-of-work golem, a vampire dragon and a vegetarian werewolf...

About the Author

Terry Pratchett is one of the most popular living authors in the world. His first story was published when he was thirteen, and his first full-length book when he was twenty. He worked as a journalist to support the writing habit, but gave up the day job when the success of his books meant that it was costing him money to go to work.

Prachett's acclaimed novels are bestsellers in the U.S. and the United Kingdom and have sold more than twenty-one million copies worldwide. He lives in England, where he writes all the time. (It's his hobby as well.)

Totally great! Someone is poisoning the Patrician through unknown means, golems throughout the city are behaving strangely, there have been two unexplained deaths, and Sgt. Vimes is losing sleep. I laughed out loud in public several times with this one; Wee Mad Arthur, the gnome who meets the rats he's exterminating on their own terms, is particularly great.
