Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.

But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn't want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.

Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she's made for herself—and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.

Review:

"A cross between The Hunger Games (minus the bloodsport) and The Bachelor (minus the bloodsport), this trilogy launch employs multiple conventions of the dystopian romance genre — strong-willed heroine, heart-wrenching love triangle, far-future setting divided by class. That said, it's a lot of fun. In a post WWIII U.S. divided by caste, teenage America Singer and her family are Fives, struggling musicians and artists. In love with a Six, America is headed for a life of servitude and hunger, until she is chosen for the Selection — a contest through which Prince Maxon will pick his princess. The Selection brings America instant notoriety and prestige, but also thrusts her into a ring of jealous, desperate girls all trying to win the prince's heart. Cass (author of the self-published The Siren) deftly builds the chemistry between America and Maxon, while stoking the embers of America's first, forbidden love. Headstrong and outspoken, America is an easy heroine to root for, and the scenes where she tries to fit in to her new royal life are charming. A TV drama based on the books is in production. Ages 13 — up. Agent: Elana Roth, Red Tree Literary." Publishers Weekly Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

I really enjoyed this book. I received a copy as a gift from a friend and I devoured the book in a few sittings.
It has been described as Hunger Games meets the Bachelor. The Hunger Games isn't really an accurate comparison though. Yes, there is a lottery but that is where the similarities end.
This book has humor, it has romance and it's just a lot of fun! If you are looking for a quick fun read, try this one.

While unsure of this title and its content, I was utterly blown away by The Selection from Kiera Cass.

With a country steeped in unrest and rival local groups, The Selection gives us a timeless tale of girl meets prince. In this case one girl is selected from certain areas in her country to be voted out Bachelor style until one girl is selection to become princess and in her own time Queen.

The Selection opens up to our main character America Singer who has a secret love in a lower class level from her own class of Artist in a caste filled new country. Upon the receipt of a letter from the kingdom America joins into becoming part of the very selection that she despises so that her own family can receive money from her participation to purchase foods and goods they so disparately need. With the promise of keeping some of her own earned income in the family, America soon expresses her love and intentions to this boy she loves, only for her attentions to be turned down and he leaves her.

Lost and torn America moves into the castle and into the realization that this Selection may become more than she bargained for.
With a Prince who may be more than a pretty face and a host of attacks on the castle, America soon finds strength not only in herself, but also in what is worth fighting for.

Kiera Cass has created an amazing story that will captivate readers and give us all that feeling of being Selected or being a diamond in the rough. With a great pair of characters in America and Prince Maxon we soon find ourselves warming up to their light banter that soon kindles into something more while at the same time realizing that life outside the castle walls may perchance be hiding something more in terms of rebellion.

The Selection is a riveting new read that will grip readers and keep them at the edge of their seats eager for more.

Wow! I absolutely loved this book! It's such a fun and light hearted read. I must say though that the only similarity it has to The Hunger Games is the lottery aspect. Aside from that, the two are completely different beasts.

I really liked America's character, she was out spoken and very assertive. I was glad to see another novel with such a strong female lead. Maxon (the Prince) was also a wonderful new-comer to the book world. I really liked his cheeky side and how candidly he spoke with America.

Aspen on the other hand, I have a love hate thing going on with him, that's all I'm going to say to avoid spoilers. I really like the premise of this book and the writing style was fun.

I had a feeling how the book would end when I was reading it, but the cliff hanger ending still had me saying "That's it? What happens next?"

If you like the show "The Bachelor" and are looking for a fun, easy, light read. Then pick this one up and give it a try!
