Publisher Comments:

Sixteen-year-old Eleanor Fitts brother is missing. And when she discovers that the Dead are rising in Philadelphia and wreaking havoc throughout the city, she knows that her brother is involved.

So Eleanor enlists the help of the Spirit-Hunters. This motley crew, hired to protect the city from supernatural forces, is after the necromancer who has been reanimating corpses. Their skills can save her brother. But as Eleanor spends time with the Spirit-Hunters, and their handsome inventor, Daniel, the situation becomes dire. Now not only is her reputation at risk, but her very life may hang in the balance.

In Something Strange and Deadly, the first book in a trilogy, Susan Dennard weaves together vividly imagined scenes of action, adventure, and gorgeous Victorian fashion to create an entertaining steampunk tapestry of humor, horror, and romance. Readers who love Cassandra Clares Infernal Devices series will be intrigued from the start.

Review:

"In Victorian-era Philadelphia, 16-year-old Eleanor Fitt worries more about 'hungry and dangerous' reanimated corpses than about parasols and corsets. In this first book in a trilogy, debut author Dennard deftly weaves together a vast plot involving social status, spirits, zombies, necromancy, romance, and pseudoscience. Eleanor's brother, Elijah, never returns home from New York City, instead sending a cryptic letter ripe for deciphering. As the dead rise and acquaintances are murdered, Eleanor fears for Elijah's life. Looking for answers, she sneaks off to find the Spirit-Hunters, a group of eccentric teenagers, at the 1876 International Centennial Exhibition. Meanwhile, Eleanor's mother is trying to marry her off to wealthy and connected Clarence Wilcox, but feisty Eleanor can't shake her nagging feelings about him — or about a ragtag Spirit-Hunter genius named Daniel. In a swirling, rib-tickling story, Eleanor displays both good sense and the bravery to fight evil and remain free from the tyranny of high society. Blending historical fiction, horror, romance, and mystery, Dennard creates a roaring — and addictive — gothic world. Ages 13 — up. Agent: Joanna Stampfel-Volpe, New Leaf Literary & Media." Synopsis:

There's something strange and deadly loose in Philadelphia. . . .

Eleanor Fitt has a lot to worry about.

Her brother has gone missing, her family has fallen on hard times, and her mother is determined to marry her off to any rich young man who walks by. But this is nothing compared to what she's just read in the newspaper:

The Dead are rising in Philadelphia.

And then, in a frightening attack, a zombie delivers a letter to Eleanor . . . from her brother.

Whoever is controlling the Dead army has taken her brother as well. If Eleanor is going to find him, she'll have to venture into the lab of the notorious Spirit-Hunters, who protect the city from supernatural forces. But as Eleanor spends more time with the Spirit-Hunters, including the maddeningly stubborn yet handsome Daniel, the situation becomes dire. And now, not only is her reputation on the line, but her very life may hang in the balance.

About the Author

Susan Dennard is a writer turned marine biologist turned writer again. Strange and Ever After is the conclusion to her trilogy, which includes A Darkness Strange and Lovely and Something Strange and Deadly. Among the traits she shares with her heroine Eleanor are a weakness for Shakespeare quotes, a healthy appetite for baked goods, and an insatiable curiosity. Sadly, Susan does not get to wear a corset or wave a parasol on a daily basis.

Love in the Time of Zombies.

Something Sweet And Deadly is a hauntingly tragic tale of a family's past that is causing deaths in the present future. The once proud and fruitful Fitt family of Pittsburg reigned over their endeavors, but after an accident at her father's work and his untimely death, Eleanor Fitt is in trouble. Her brother Elijah is missing and with her Mother's spending the family is dwindling into financial ruin. Desperately trying to throw her daughter to suitors, Eleanor's mother is missing what matters most to Eleanor right now which is her intrigue, and her passion. Hunting down the truth about her brother Elijah and what the projects that he was working in truly entailed could ruin her family forever.
Eleanor is a strong passionate heroine striving to fight a just cause and save her family and home from zombies, just as her family is also causing their destructive onslaught. As the story in Something Sweet And Deadly unfolds we find that there is a rotting core in many of us and that power can be a intoxicating dangerous passion. With a great cast of characters who are struggling to do what is right while at the same time being persecuted for their stature in life as well as their places in society, brings a historical paranormal twist to this YA release. This author has created a riveting read of love and passion for justice and inequality in characters that have little voice or power of their own compared to leaders in their world or the main populous. When your place in society can be destroyed by a stray seen kiss, or damaged by an event in the past, and when obligation reigns down on you tighter than your corset strings how does one endure standing up from propriety and fighting for the right things even as they could be destroying you.
