Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In Reconstructing Amelia, the stunning debut novel from Kimberly McCreight, Kate's in the middle of the biggest meeting of her career when she gets the telephone call from Grace Hall, her daughters exclusive private school in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Amelia has been suspended, effective immediately, and Kate must come get her daughter—now. But Kates stress over leaving work quickly turns to panic when she arrives at the school and finds it surrounded by police officers, fire trucks, and an ambulance. By then its already too late for Amelia. And for Kate.

An academic overachiever despondent over getting caught cheating has jumped to her death. At least thats the story Grace Hall tells Kate. And clouded as she is by her guilt and grief, it is the one she forces herself to believe. Until she gets an anonymous text: She didnt jump.

Reconstructing Amelia is about secret first loves, old friendships, and an all-girls club steeped in tradition. But, most of all, its the story of how far a mother will go to vindicate the memory of a daughter whose life she couldnt save.

Fans of Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl will find Reconstructing Amelia just as gripping and surprising.

Synopsis:

Litigation lawyer and harried single mother Kate Baron is shocked when her daughter's exclusive Brooklyn private school calls to tell her that Amelia—her intelligent, high-achieving fifteen-year-old—has been caught cheating. But when Kate arrives at Grace Hall, she's blindsided by far more devastating news: Amelia is dead. Despondent, she's jumped from the school's roof. At least that's what Grace Hall and the police tell Kate. It's what she believes, too, until she gets the anonymous text: Amelia didn't jump. Now, Kate is going to find the truth—no matter where it leads. Sifting through Amelia's e-mails, text messages, and Facebook posts, Kate reconstructs the pieces of her daughter's life and the people in it, uncovering why she was on Grace Hall's roof that day—and how she died.

A superb blend of Tana French and Jodi Picoult, Reconstructing Amelia is a story of secrets and lies, friends and bullies. It's about how well any parent really knows their child and how far one mother will go to vindicate the memory of a daughter whose life she could not save.

Kate's life becomes a nightmare when she learns of her daughter, Amelia's suicide. When an anonymous text informs Kate that Amelia "didn't jump, Kate's nightmare continues as she unravels the truth. This novel reminds us that, as parents, our children often have lives beyond our control and our knowledge. Told from alternating viewpoints, we see not only a mother's anguish, but a daughter's secret life. Add this to your summer reading list.

This is a perfect book for summer: engrossing enough to keep you rooted, but simple enough that you won't forget what happened when you put it down to take a dip in the pool or a sip of your cool drink. The story uses that current style of combining narrative, text messages, Facebook posts, and shifting points of view, which I like. I saw this as a story of love between a hardworking professional single mother and her teenage daughter, but that's not all...

This book is definitely a page turner. The author beautifully gives both Kate and Amelia's perspective during different moments in time, both leading up to the same revelation - what happened to Amelia. The author also does a fabulous job of giving the reader clues instead of spelling everything out, which makes it fun to create your own theories along the way. Reconstructing Amelia focuses a lot around hazing and bullying, but not in a preachy way. I highly recommend this book; you won't want to put it down!
