Publisher Comments:

Why do the storks no longer come to the little Dutch fishing village of Shora to nest? It was Lina, one of the six schoolchildren who first asked the question, and she set the others to wondering. And sometimes when you begin to wonder, you begin to make things happen. So the children set out to bring the storks back to Shora. The force of their vision put the whole village to work until at last the dream began to come true.

I first read this book when I was in school, almost forty years ago. Reading it again to my boys, I can see why I loved it so. De Jong had a gift for writing both action and emotion. Even though the story is set a long time ago in a very distant land, the struggles and dreams of the main characters, all children, are real and vivid to my six- and eight-year-old. De Jong describes deep emotions and complicated situations in a way children can understand, really from a child's perspective. It's a long book, but the boys look forward to each new installment. For me, it makes a wonderful break from the entertaining but mechanical doings of Jack and Annie in the Magic Treehouse series, or from Captain Underpants! I plan to read other De Jong books to my sons. My younger son says that this is the best kids' book ever, and my oldest is planning to read it to himself.

I just read this book to my 2 boys, ages 6 and 8. They loved it. Each page was more exciting than the last. They were really emotionally tied to the characters and rooting for their success. The vocabulary is rich, some of the words and concepts had to be explained to my 6 year old. Otherwise a suspenseful read out loud book.
