Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

As boys, George, the son of a Midlands vicar, and Arthur, living in shabby genteel Edinburgh, find themselves in a vast and complex world at the heart of the British Empire. Years later-- one struggling with his identity in a world hostile to his ancestry, the other creating the world' s most famous detective while in love with a woman who is not his wife- their fates become inextricably connected.

In Arthur & George, Julian Barnes explores the grand tapestry of late-Victorian Britain to create his most intriguing and engrossing novel yet.

Synopsis:

Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize, and a Richard & Judy Book Club choice, this accessible and profound novel is now published in paperback. Centring on a Victorian "cause celebre" Barnes brings the period, the case and the inner lives of the two main characters vividly to life. 'This novel is Barnes at his best' "Times"

I want to nominate "Arthur and George" by Julian Barnes for the book of the decade.

I had read "The history of the world in 10 1/2 chapters" and continued to re read parts of it for years, including the story Shipwreck which I referred to in teaching my art history students about how paintings are(or could be) made.

I also read "Flaubert's Parrot" and "England, England" before reading Arthur and George. I don't know another author who has achieved such a complete understanding of human nature and human endeavours and has written with so much inventiveness.

I nominate "Arthur and George" because it is a very moving story, I think that Julian Barnes was sobered by what he found and retold and that he turned "on a dime" from his earlier cleverness to a more deeply felt state.
