About the Author

Wallace Stegner (1903 – 1993) was the author of many books of fiction and non-fiction, including the National Book Award-winning The Spectator Bird (1976) and Crossing to Safety. Angle of Repose won the Pulitzer Prize in 1971.

This is great storytelling that covers three generations of an American family. It is historical fiction and gritty and heartbreaking at times. You should read it.

My favorite book. As a genealogist, I appreciate how Lyman wanted to know more about his grandparents and how they lived and loved. Wallace Stegner took the story of Mary Foote and created a novel which spans a hundred years, three generations, and the cultural changes in America. A well-written and engrossing book.

great portrait of a marriage, and of the west of a hundred plus years ago. i haven't cared as much about what happened to a story's characters since the brothers karamazov.
