This charming story is of an outlaw family of thieves, living in a forest. Ronia, the daughter, befriends a boy from an enemy group of robbers. Together they explore the forest, deliberately face their fears, and learn great lessons of love, trust and forgiveness. Full of strong emotions, very realistic characters, fantastic creatures and lots of adventure, this is a really enjoyable read. In some ways it's like a meeting of Peter Pan and Robin Hood. There's also a sense of the Romeo and Juliet story, because of the boy/girl friendship from rival, feuding families. This book will especially appeal to young girls because it features a young female protagonists who is admirably brave and resourceful, yet has her own human faults as well. I would have loved this book if I'd read it as a child, and plan to read it to my own daughter someday.

Cindy Ann Alicia Miller, June 25, 2007 (view all comments by Cindy Ann Alicia Miller)
Despite their father?s immortal feud, forest ?roaming, nature loving Ronia rescues Birk from the abyss of Hell?s Gap and sparks an enduring, secret friendship. They forge through the dangers of rumphobs, murktrolls, bloodthirsty harpies, and the ignorance that divides their robber families in this fabulous, madcap, poignant romp.
This not -to -be missed masterpiece is a University of Minnesota Foreign Film Festival favorite.
