"Corduroy" is a true classic that any child who has ever loved a teddy bear or a doll will enjoy. Beautiful illustrations and a wonderful storyline make for a very entertaining book that they will always remember.

My son and I both enjoyed this book when he was a preschooler, and last year, I participated with my 5th grade students in setting a world record: a half million people read this book on October 7, 2008, in an effort promoted by Jumpstart, a literacy organization. "Corduroy" turned 40 last year.

Corduroy is a plush toy on a department store shelf. Lisa is drawn to him, but her mother only sees that he's missing a button. Corduroy leaves his shelf that night after closing to search for it. The illustrations show the reader how a big department store might appear to a little person (or bear).

There's at least one sequel: A Pocket for Corduroy, which I remember as more colorful in illustration. Corduroy has the story you want, however.
