Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) wrote two of Russia's greatest novels, War and Peace (1869) and Anna Karenina (1877), as well as many short stories and essays.

This is the best translation I have ever read. It is so true to the Russian, it's amazing. Anna Karenina is the best novel ever written, get it!

This may be the best book I've ever read, and I've been hiding my face between the covers for forty years... The thing that amazes me most about this novel is that it seems to me completely modern, as if it could have been written last year, rather than so long ago. The problems, sorrows and joys that Tolstoy captures are as much with us now as they were in his time. I think Tolstoy must have been a heck of a guy.

I think most people are familiar with the story of Anna Karenina, but aren't familiar with the book itself. Tolstoy wrote this book in such great detail that you feel as though you know the characters in person--for example, reading about one of the characters may be like looking into the mirror, as it was for me. Two stories, loosely tied together, the lives of Levin and Kitty, and Anna and Vronsky, come together at the end to form a gorgeous work of fiction. Required reading for those who enjoy love stories or feel the urge to pick apart fascinating characters.
