Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In celebration of the fifteenth anniversary of its original publication, Carol Shields's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is now available in a Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition

ONE OF THE MOST successful and acclaimed novels of our time, this fictionalized autobiography of Daisy Goodwill Flett is a subtle but affecting portrait of an everywoman reflecting on an unconventional life. What transforms this seemingly ordinary tale is the richness of Daisy's vividly described inner life--from her earliest memories of her adoptive mother to her awareness of impending death.

Just gorgeous! Shields spins a tale that brings to mind books like Everything Is Illuminated, One Hundred Years of Solitude, and Middlesex. Generations are represented with simultaneous gravity and an air of mischievous "que sera sera." The reader moves through Daisy Stone's life with her in an intimate and detailed way, experiencing the years in a sensual, palpable manner. The Sone Diaries is a gift and a pleasure to read.

I know this book has been around a while but I've only just read it and I loved it! What an intriguing tale spun over a lifetime. I especially appreciate the words, thoughts, observations offered on her deathbed.
