As a 100-year-old woman secretly writes the story of her life, of why she was committed to an institution t age 30, Sebastian Barry's language sculpts and embroiders and illuminates his characters as the human costs of the "troubles" of Ireland in the 1930s are brought under his tender microscope. This novel is both powerful and delicate as well as terrible and beautiful.
