A bold new remedy for the sprawling and wasteful health care industry

Where else but the doctorand#8217;s office do you have toand#160;fill out a form on a clipboard? Have you noticedand#160;that hospital bills are almost unintelligible, exceptand#160;for the absurdly high dollar amount? Why is it thatand#160;technology in other industries drives prices down,and#160;but in health care itand#8217;s the reverse? And why, inand#160;health care, is the customer so often treated as aand#160;mere bystanderand#151;and an ignorant one at that?

The same American medical establishmentand#160;that saves lives and performs wondrous miraclesand#160;is also a $2.7 trillion industry in deep dysfunction.and#160;And now, with the Affordable Care Actand#160;(Obamacare), it is called on to extend full benefitsand#160;to tens of millions of newly insured. You mightand#160;think that this would leave us with a bleak choiceand#151;and#160;either to devote more of our national budget toand#160;health care or to make do with less of it. But thereand#8217;sand#160;another path.

In this provocative book, Jonathan Bush,and#160;cofounder and CEO of athenahealth, calls for aand#160;revolution in health care to give customers moreand#160;choices, freedom, power, and information, andand#160;at far lower prices. With humor and a tell-it-likeit-and#160;is style, he picks up insights and ideas from hisand#160;days as an ambulance driver in New Orleans,and#160;an army medic, and an entrepreneur launching aand#160;birthing start-up in San Diego. In struggling to saveand#160;that dying business, Bushand#8217;s team created a softwareand#160;program that eventually became athenahealth, aand#160;cloud-based services company that handles electronicand#160;medical records, billing, and patient communicationsand#160;for more than fifty thousand medicaland#160;providers nationwide.

Bush calls for disruption of the status quoand#160;through new business models, new payment models,and#160;and new technologies that give patients moreand#160;control of their care and enhance the physicianpatientand#160;experience. He shows how this is alreadyand#160;happening. From birthing centers in Florida toand#160;urgent care centers in West Virginia, upstarts areand#160;disrupting health care by focusing on efficiency,and#160;innovation, and customer service. Bush offers aand#160;vision and plan for change while bringing a breakthroughand#160;perspective to the debates surroundingand#160;Obamacare.

Youand#8217;ll learn how:

and#149; Well-intended government regulations prop upand#160;overpriced incumbents and slow the pace ofand#160;innovation.
and#149; Focused, profit-driven disrupters are chippingand#160;away at the dominance of hospitals by offeringand#160;routine procedures at lower cost.
and#149; Scrappy digital start-ups are equipping providersand#160;and patients with new apps and technologiesand#160;to access medical data and take control of care.
and#149; Making informed choices about the care weand#160;receive and pay for will enable a more humaneand#160;and satisfying health care system to emerge.

Bushand#8217;s plan calls for Americans not only to demandand#160;more from providers but also to accept more responsibilityand#160;for our health, to weigh risks and make hardand#160;choicesand#151;in short, to take back control of an industryand#160;that is central to our lives and our economy.

Reid is able to take the current issue of health care and explain it in a manner that is easy to digest. He discusses his travels through foreign health care systems with his own injured shoulder. By doing this he is able to be a real life example of how each system deviates from the other. Comparing each system illuminates the problems with each. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning about the American health care system as well as others. The reader is able to see that there is no truly perfect health care system and that even the most respected systems have flaws that jeopardize the nation. Anyone who wants to gain an educated opinion on this health care debate should read this book.
