A mesmerizing tale of love-from the author of The Bastard of Istanbul

Elif Shafak, the most widely read female writer in Turkey, has earned a growing fan base all over the world with her bestselling The Bastard of Istanbul. In The Forty Rules of Love, her lyrical, imaginative new novel about the famous Sufi mystic Rumi, Shafak effortlessly blends East and West, past and present, to create a dramatic, compelling, and exuberant tale about how love works in the world. Shafak unfolds two parallel narratives-one set in the thirteenth century, when Rumi encountered his spiritual mentor, the wandering dervish known as Shams of Tabriz, and one contemporary, as an unhappy American housewife, inspired by Rumi's message of love, finds the courage to transform her life.

About the Author

Elif Shafak is an award-winning author whose previous books include The Bastard of Istanbul and The Saint of Incipient Insanities. She divides her time between London and Istanbul.

This is a novel which transcends Centuries. An imaginative novel where Shafak has spun ancient mysticism and spirituality into an intriguing novel with vivid characters. Ella, a middle-aged American woman, innocently accepts a job to read and review a novel by Aziz. This little action causes a huge impact on her life - like a rock thrown into a lake.

The story is interspersed with little nuggets of wisdom based on Sufiism and most readers will read and re-read the Forty Rules and agree with them.

"The Forty Rules of Love," is a novel that you will not only want to read but also to own.

Sufism isn't easy to comprehend, still if you have a curiosity towards Sufism, Eastern mystics or if you've always thought about reading Mesnevi of Rumi but could never dare to start, here is the perfect book. The content is rich; it gives the basics of Sufism, the social life in Konya during those times, the history and still it gave me the pleasure and ease of reading a novel. Mesnevi addresses to the heart, not the mind - and this book is not a directory, it really makes you "perceive" and "feel" what it is. And it's Elif Shafak's ingenuity that makes the materialistic 21st century man familiarize himself with the core of Sufism by means of the stories of the characters from 13th century to our times.
