When 14-year-old Peak Marcello is caught scaling a skyscraper to place his signature graffiti tag, he is offered a choice: spend three years in juvenile detention, or climb Mt. Everest with his long-absent father.  And though the choice might be easy, the journey is not.  Peak is physically and emotionally challenged by the grueling climb, the weather, and the politics and drama of climbing culture.  Oh, and the pressure is on, because if Peak can reach the summit before his 15th birthday, he'll break a world record and gain glory and money.  Roland Smith's Peak is gripping and surprising, and though it's written for a middle-grade audience, readers young and old will be sucked in by the sharp writing and memorable characters.

Publisher Comments:

After Peak Marcello is arrested for scaling a New York City skyscraper, hes left with two choices: wither away in Juvenile Detention or to go live with his long-lost father, who runs a climbing company in Thailand. But Peak quickly learns that his fathers renewed interest in him has strings attached. Big strings. He wants Peak to be the youngest person to reach the Everest summit—and his motives are selfish at best. Even so, for a climbing addict like Peak, tackling Everest is the challenge of a lifetime. But its also one that could cost him his life.

The book Peak tells of a boy with a drive for climbing. Peak is a boy living in New York City with his divorced mother. When he is caught climbing a skyscraper he is sent to live with his father of the other side of the world. There his father plans to have him scale the highest mountain in the world. A variety of ideas keep you thinking throughout the book. Just because this book is climbing based you don't have know anything about climbing. There are family struggles, tough decisions, and other things that keep you entertained throughout. The way Roland Smith adds a little bit of every genre and idea into this story makes it even better. This book is a must read for anyone who enjoys a book full of ideas.
