About the Author

W. Somerset Maugham was one of the twentieth century's most popular novelists as well as a celebrated playwright, critic, and short story writer. He was born in Paris but grew up in England and served as a secret agent for the British during World War I. He wrote many novels, including the classics Of Human Bondage, The Razor's Edge, Cakes and Ale, Christmas Holiday, The Moon and Sixpence, Theatre, and Up at the Villa.

This is the book that first made me hating kitty fane for her immoral decisions, but then I don't know why I felt like reading it again. And this time I realized Maugham was not talking about any angel. he has portrayed a very normal human-being of flesh and blood, one part of whose mind who has fathomless desire while the other part constantly feels guilt.
The journey through the book was about growing self-respect. We, humans make mistakes, but the most important thing is that whether we repent or not. There can be no bigger penalty than repentance. Kitty regrets her decisions...so I think she is forgivable. Well that's my very own point of view.

And about Walter, well, I feel pity for him. Though I know life has no place for fairy-tales but the end of this man could have been much better.
