In his introduction, Earle Cairns distinguishes between the events or incidents that have happened and information about those incidents. By doing so, he separates the subject matter of the scientist from the study of the process of time and product which is the objective of the student of history. By acknowledging that the "absolute and objective incident. . . can be known only directly and fully by God," the author sets the stage for interpreting human history in the context of God's redemptive plan and opens the pathway for the Church historian to assess the effect of Divine grace and the work of the Holy Spirit in the context of the historical process.
