In this visual celebration of Muhammed Ali, which spans the yeas 1961 to 1964, award-winning photographer Flip Schulke shares photos of Ali during the early stage of his career, when the boxing champion was training in Miami, Florida and went by his original name, Cassius Clay. The photographs are accompanied by Matt Schudel's biographical information and interviews with Ali's friends.

About the Author

FLIP SCHULKE has been one of America's premier photojournalists for more than forty-five years. His work has appeared in Life, National Geographic, Sports Illustrated, Time, Newsweek, The Saturday Evening Post, and numerous European publications. Schulke has won dozens of national photojournalism awards, including first-prize honors for Picture of the Year. In 1995 he received the Crystal Eagle Award from the National Press Photographers for his documentation of the civil rights movement.


MATT SCHUDEL is a senior writer for the Sunday magazine of the Sun-Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
