Oh, what a fine, fat book this is. Beautiful Creatures plays out over 600+ pages, and every page is worthwhile. There are some wonderful, rich, and powerful sentences that need to be reread. The main character, Ethan, has a strong voice; you’ll wish you could be his friend. The entire book will have you reading in a Southern accent. In the Southern Gothic tradition, the town of Gatlin plays a character, with its Civil War history, small-town bigotry, and cooking contests. Gatlin's good old average Americana is balanced with an underlying layer of strange mystery. There is a distracted librarian with hidden depths, crazy aunties with a surprising strain of sanity in their sweet madness, and a lovely and turbulent teenage love story. And sometimes, it's funny! The authors find humor in the oddest of moments. I loved this book from the very first page to the very last page. I loved the cover. I loved the afterward. Beautiful Creatures is one of the best books that I read in 2009.

Publisher Comments:

This much anticipated sequel to the New York Times Bestseller Impossible – a fantasy full of suspense, mystery, and romance – will appeal to fans of Beautiful Creatures, Raven Boys, and Wicked Lovely.

Fenella was the first Scarborough girl to be cursed, hundreds of years ago, and she has been trapped in the faerie realm ever since, forced to watch generations of daughters try to break this same faerie curse that has enslaved them all. But now Fenellas descendant, Lucy, has accomplished the impossible and broken the curse, so why is Fenella still trapped in Faerie?

In her desperation, Fenella makes a deal with the faerie queen: If she can accomplish three acts of destruction, she will be free, at last, to die.  What she doesn't realize is that these acts must be aimed at her own family – and if she fails, the consequences will be dire, for all of the Scarborough girls.

How can she possibly choose to hurt her own cherished family – not to mention the new man whom shes surprised to find herself falling in love with? But if she doesnt go through with the tasks, how will she manage to save her dear ones?

Synopsis:

Lena Duchannes is unlike anyone the small Southern town of Gatlin has ever seen, and she's struggling to conceal her power and a curse that has haunted her family for generations. But even within the crumbling graveyards of the forgotten South, a secret cannot stay hidden forever--and one secret could change everything.

Synopsis:

A thrilling romance filled with ghosts, rebellion and revenge!

"I FELL HEAD OVER HEALS IN LOVE WITH THE MAIN CHARACTERS, ETHAN AND LENA, IN THIS BOOK!!!! AND even the supporting character's Amma and Macon Ravenwood. It was like they were acting out a play right in front of me. The words just spoke to me.

"The story is about Ethan Wate, a popular basketball player who has lived in Gatlin, South Carolina his entire life, and Lena Duchannes, the mysterious new girl in school."

That is all you need to know... It's compared to Twilight but honestly you can not compare it to Twilight! Yes, it's a young adult book, it's in the same paranormal category, but it STANDS ALONE!

PURE MAGIC IN THE MOST HONEST WAY!

A great book for young adults! PG all the way!

I read this book in less then two days and am so sad that I will have to wait til October for the next book, Beautiful Darkness..."

Cherry's Review:
Cliffhanger Ending!

I like the humor in the story lines. Chapter one, and the book had me giggling on my lunch break with everybody giving me looks in the staff room. I think that earned the story-telling quality a 4 out of 5. The story itself even if it is not terribly original is quite captivating. The authors have seemlessly blended modern day teen culture with paranormal fantasy that as a reader I could believe in. If I have to grade the "suspension of disbelief" for this story I will have to give it a 4.5 out of 5. The ending however is a cliffhanger. Although the ending did close the book nicely, it is also the beginning of the next book. Gave the impression that the whole book is just chapter one of a bigger book. That deserved a 2 out of 5. The cover art? It could do better. I have seen this book for sometime now in the blogosphere but ignored it for a few months just because I do not find the cover attractive to my fantasy reader's eyes. The art department who did this cover needs to be fired. In a marketing graph, this cover art would be a 1 out of 5. Overall, I would give this book an entertainment value of 3.5.

Susan Wiget, March 24, 2010 (view all comments by Susan Wiget)
This is a young adult supernatural romance, the same subgenre as Twilight, but it is infinitely better than Twilight. The writing is lively, the characters are sparkling with life, the love interest Lena is a strong female character who, unlike Bella, is a strong individual and doesn’t fit in with creepy patriarchal values. The book is from the first person perspective of Ethan, a high school boy who is anxious to escape his boring, small-minded small town in the Deep South. The town becomes much more interesting when Lena, a teen with magic powers, moves in with her uncle the town recluse and shows up for class. She quickly stirs things up in the closed-minded community.

My only complaint, besides a couple of dangling modifiers, is that the book includes a few fat phobic comments directed at one female student, something teens most emphatically do not need to read and that furthermore indicates that the authors should read Fat is a Feminist Issue.

Overall, the book is full of rich detail, magic, and suspense. The characters are complex and sympathetic and come vividly to life. Since the book has two authors, no doubt they gave each other feedback. This is for anyone who enjoys dark fantasy.
