THE START OF A BRAND NEW URBAN FANTASY SET IN SMALL TOWN MAINE WHERE EVERYTHING IS NOT AS IT SHOULD BE...

Living in small town Rockabill, Maine, Jane True always knew she didn't quite fit in with so-called normal society. During her nightly, clandestine swim in the freezing winter ocean, a grisly find leads Jane to startling revelations about her heritage: she is only half-human.

Now, Jane must enter a world filled with supernatural creatures alternatively terrifying, beautiful, and deadly- all of which perfectly describe her new "friend," Ryu, a gorgeous and powerful vampire.

It is a world where nothing can be taken for granted: a dog can heal with a lick; spirits bag your groceries; and whatever you do, never-ever-rub the genie's lamp.

If you love Sookie Stackhouse, then you'll want to dive into Nicole Peeler's enchanting debut novel.

Synopsis:

In the tradition of Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire Mysteries comes an irresistible urban fantasy debut set in small-town Maine, and featuring half-human and half-selkie Jane True, who comes across a murder victim during her nightly clandestine swim in the freezing ocean. Original.

'Tempest Rising' is an adult urban fantasy of a half-human young woman discovering her heritage and about all the perils that doing so entails. This is a well-written novel by Ms. Peeler, and her characters are interesting and engaging. It seems like there may be an over-flooded market of vampire and werewolf stories, but Ms. Peeler's world and her characterization of Jane True is unique and refreshing. The cover art has created some controversy, and a casual observer scanning bookshelves may stop and think "teen goth emo story" and bypass it, but as they say, don't judge a book by its cover - just start reading and I'll bet you'll be a fan.

'Tempest Rising' will grab you right away and never let you go, not even at the end. Luckily, the author has a sequel in the works. I'm looking forward to reading more about Jane True!
