Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Before Liz Lemon, before "Weekend Update," before "Sarah Palin," Tina Fey was just a young girl with a dream: a recurring stress dream that she was being chased through a local airport by her middle-school gym teacher. She also had a dream that one day she would be a comedian on TV.

She has seen both these dreams come true.

At last, Tina Fey's story can be told. From her youthful days as a vicious nerd to her tour of duty on Saturday Night Live; from her passionately halfhearted pursuit of physical beauty to her life as a mother eating things off the floor; from her one-sided college romance to her nearly fatal honeymoon — from the beginning of this paragraph to this final sentence.

Tina Fey reveals all, and proves what we've all suspected: you're no one until someone calls you bossy.

(Includes Special, Never-Before-Solicited Opinions on Breastfeeding, Princesses, Photoshop, the Electoral Process, and Italian Rum Cake!)

Review:

"Fey's caustic wit and wry delivery made it clear she wasn't another airhead comedienne willing to play dumb for laughs. If the world needed reminding that smart girls can be funny and sexy, Tina Fey proved it." Playboy

Review:

"Goddess of the geeks." Time

Synopsis:

From her lifetime pursuit of the perfect Beauty Routine to the oversold joys of breastfeeding, from her whirlwind tour of duty as the Other Sarah Palin on Saturday Night Live to her early days in the comedy trenches — Tina Fey puts her unique and endlessly funny mark on modern life, work, marriage, and motherhood.

Synopsis:

From her humble roots in the Bronx to Laverne and Shirley and her unlikely ascent in Hollywood, the beloved actor and director tells the story of her incredible life.

Synopsis:

At the age of twenty-six, Penny Marshall was a divorced mother of one living in the Bronx. One year later she starred in a Head & Shoulders commercial (she was the one with the dandruff) with Farah Fawcett. So began the unlikely career of one of Hollywoods most accomplished directors.

My Mother Was Nuts tells the story of Marshalls incredible life, from her starring role on the classic sitcom Laverne and Shirley to her trailblazing moment as the first woman to direct a movie grossing more than $100 million at the box office.

The book is a behind-the-scenes look at Hollywood life, exploring her friendships with John Belushi, Lorne Michaels, Art Garfunkel, and Carrie Fisher, her marriage and eventual divorce from Rob Reiner, and her experiences working with Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Geena Davis, Denzel Washington, and Drew Barrymore.

This is a book about Hollywood, womanhood, and the power of Spanx.

Okay, so I was a Suzie-come-lately to Bossypants, but when the book and I met up, there was so much hilarity and fun. Tina Fey’s life account from childhood to present day is a hoot and then some. Her talent for comedy writing spills over into her life story and makes for riotous reading. My personal favorite is the chapter recalling her experience when she worked at the Evanston, Illinois YMCA. The story about Tim and Joe Daffy-Ducked had me rolling in uncontrollable hysterics for ten minutes: “Heeth off his medth.” I also like how Fey recounts her life of motherhood with great self-deprecation, but the kind of insight and honesty that resonates universally. From “Teat Nazis” to her list of activities for “Me Time,” you cannot get through this book without feeling a bit lighter from the humor.

Tina Fey's story - through her own hilarious and well-written words - tells the journey of a woman who has followed her passions while confronting obstacles in what is a male dominated (to say the least) industry. In short, it's so funny yet so honest that I couldn't keep it down. She references her career, how women should approach their careers, her sex life and her great advice for women and men in this department and she highlights her own challenges (in her life and in herself). It's oddly both funny and self-reflective. The imagery she paints just jumps off the page. I highly recommend Bossypants!

My mother recommended this book to me, and bought it for my birthday. It was laugh-out loud hilarious. If you need proof that Tina Fey is a top-notch comedy writer you need only read her book.
