For a childrens book it was quite amazing. I myself, being out of that certain age range for this book, rather loved it. I can see why they would want to make it into a motion picture. Didn't have detail in some parts but it wasn't needed. This book sold itself. The whole series is definitely a must read for children and adults alike. It'd please just about anyone. You really get to know the characters in the book and you get even closer with the dragons. The plot, development, and dialogue make you feel really involved with the story and its characters.

I had an ARC of this book lying around, and when I heard that there was a movie coming out, I figured it was time to get around to reading it.

This is a cute book, nothing terribly special, but with some pretty funny bits, and Hiccup is an appealing hero. I think it might appeal to middle grade readers who might like a fantasy novel with a "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" feel to it, or to kids who like the Time Warp Trio series. Definitely a great one for reluctant readers.
