Nobody looks forward to talking to their kids about death. But when kids experience losing someone they are close to, they really want to understand what death is. Sometimes it is hard for even the best parents to find the right words, and even if they do find the right words, there is something comforting for kids about a book that you can hang onto and look at whenever you want. When my mom died I bought several children's book about death, and I think this was my favorite, and my child's too. It speaks simply without talking down to kids. It tells about different ways that people die, how people feel when someone dies, and the many cultural traditions around death. Depending on the age of your child, you can just look at the pictures and talk about them, read some of the what's written, or for older kids read all of it. Kids who know how to read well will appreciate being able to pull this book off the shelf when they are worrying or wondering about death and dying. I have given this book away several times to parents who have had someone their child knows die, and it really helps.
