Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Being the third part of The Lord of the Rings.

While the evil might of the Dark Lord Sauron swarmed out to conquer all Middle-earth, Frodo and Sam struggled deep into Mordor, seat of Sauron's power. To defeat the Dark Lord, the accursed Ring of Power had to be destroyed in the fires of Mount Doom. But the way was impossibly hard, and Frodo was weakening. Weighed down by the compulsion of the Ring, he began finally to despair.

The awesome conclusion of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, beloved by millions of readers around the world.

Review:

"The great tale of wonder, like the great novel, is not a preoccupation of children....[T]he adult mind has, if anything, greater need of fantasy than that of a child....In The Lord of the Rings, a whole Secondary World is created and successfully sustained through three large volumes. These are sure to remain Tolkien's life work, and are certainly destined to outlast our time." Loren Eisley, New York Herald Tribune Book Week

This concluding novel to the trilogy only enforces the fact that Tolkien is the author of a must read trilogy. This novel's cast of heroes and characters that anyone can relate to, besides the fact that only a handful of them are human, creates a story that will be read for generations. The ending leaves you with a hope that good will always overcome evil.

I found this third and concluding volume of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy to be full of rotating plots that converge beautifully, and insights on decisions and relations among characters that you are missing out on if you have only seen the film version of this story. As usual, Tolkien's descriptions and maps of places in Middle Earth made me able to picture where I was reading about and it was easy to feel as if I was in the middle of things.
