About the Author

A native of rural Benton County, Minnesota, T.J. Stiles studied history at Carleton College and Columbia University, where he received two graduate degrees. His writings about American history include articles in Smithsonian, essays in the Los Angeles Times and the Denver Post, and a five-volume series of primary-source anthologies. He lives in New York. It tells the true story of Jesse James and the horrible events that occur during and after the Civil War. The savagery of the James brothers and the guerrillas they road with can only be described in one word, butchery. Jesse James and his gang were not romantic heroes or Robin Hoods. The Civil War was one of the most destructive and violent periods in U.S. history. The bitterness that was left in its' wake lived on in men like Jesse James.

This book is everything you want in a biography, but, sometimes the author gets too involved with background information. Sometimes the events in Jesse James' life seem glossed over to provide space for rather involved socio-political issues that provided a backdrop for his life. Well researched and detailed, yes. A little hard to follow sometimes with the plethora of names given. The author makes his points very well.
