I am currently reading this series for the second time. I was thoroughly intrigued the first time through and wanted to go back to really soak in all the ideas and philosophies that Pullman introduced. He really manages to make me think about so many concepts; from the idea of a soul, to angels, to "preemptive penance" which is quite the idea to cogitate. Anyone who has given any thought to religion at all should read this book.

My husband bought this series after we saw the film version of _The Golden Compass_ and then suggested that I read it; I'm glad he did. The first book is by far better than the film version, and the second and third books build on the first in a very satisfying way, with one of the most inventive group of alien intelligences in the third book that I've seen in a long time. I would recommend the books for mature kids as well as adult readers who are open to some challenging ideas.

It's important to recall that this is a young adults genre book, and in that context - it provides a complex and deeply thoughtful story. I suppose this ranking highest for me has something to do with having just finished re-reading it, but if I were to have children I would want them to wrestle with the kinds of thoughts I find this book provoking. Way up there with the Harry Potter series. Touching on trust, critical thinking, challenges to Hope, facing the consequences of our actions and owing up to them...
