The Edible Woman

by Margaret Atwood

The Edible Woman Cover

Staff Pick

In 1968, twenty-something Margaret Atwood married her first husband; in 1969 her first novel, The Edible Woman, was published. Not only is this a remarkable read in its own right, but it's my "first works" pick because of the incredible insight I felt it gave me about this important author's life. Readers could be disappointed if expecting another The Handmaid's Tale (for that, try Oryx and Crake) but anyone wishing to broaden their understanding of this writer will be rewarded.

Publisher Comments:

Ever since her engagement, the strangest thing has been happening to Marian McAlpin: she can't eat. First meat. Then eggs, vegetables, cake, pumpkin seeds — everything! Worse yet, she has the crazy feeling that she's being eaten. Marian ought to feel consumed with passion, but she really just feels... consumed. A brilliant and powerful work rich in irony and metaphor, The Edible Woman is an unforgettable masterpiece by a true master of contemporary literary fiction.
