If any series has been able to defy space and time, it's this one. This story really draws you in, from the first paragraph and keeps you reading until the very end, desperate to read the next book. This series may seem like Twilight at first, but it gets much faster and adds more elements than romance- like, for example, time travel. Vampires may have been the "big thing', but fallen angels are definitely next in the list of mythical beings. Lauren Kate does an amazing job starting off fast, ending strong, and keeping readers hungry for more Fallen.

I’ve come to not expect much from teen books over the last year. Some are spectacular, and some are spectacularly terrible. Hunger Games: the former. Evermore: the later. So to shield myself from disappointment, I try not to read too much about the books anymore before I read them. This was the case for Fallen, which I found through Amazon recommendations (not always the best place to find books, but every once in a while there is a gem). I guessed from the cover art and the title that it had something to do with the supernatural, and I knew it was a love story.

With that in my mind I jumped in yesterday. And then resurfaced again tonight feeling quite surprised and happy. The book was good, and it managed to surprise me, which was the really good part. At first I could see similarities to other teen series that I’ve read (Twilight, The Awakening, City of Bones, The Fallen), but the book soon asserted itself and went off on its own path. I intended to put it down about an hour before I did tonight, and I ended up finishing it when I thought that wouldn’t happen until tomorrow.

Here’s a little teaser of the plot:

There’s something achingly familiar about Daniel Grigori.

Mysterious and aloof, he captures Luce Price’s attention from the moment she sees him on her first day at the Sword and Cross boarding school in sultry Savannah, Georgia. He’s the one bright spot in a place where cell phones are forbidden, the other students are all screw-ups, and security cameras watch every move.

Even though Daniel wants nothing to do with Luce—and goes out of his way to make that very clear—she can’t let it go. Drawn to him like a moth to a flame, she has to find out what Daniel is so desperate to keep secret … even if it kills her.

I’d say more, but again, the surprise of finding out all the little quirks in the story was the best part about reading it. In this case, ignorance is bliss.

It’s not Pride and Prejudice, but it was one of the better books I’ve spent two days reading. And I’m not cringing at the thought of reading the sequel (which happens when I want to know what happens next but kind of hate myself for reading on).

Fallen review by Moirae (the fates) book reviews. In Fallen by Lauren Kate we meet Luce Price and Daniel Grigori a pair of star-cross lovers…with a twist. Daniel is a fallen angel. Luce meets him when she is sent to a reform school for “problem” teens. She was sent there due to a fire at her old school, when Luce was in the room and the other student that was with her didn’t make it out of the fire.
When she sees him, she feels an immediate pull to him; however, she can’t understand why he is so rude to her.
Luce makes fast friends with Penn, her and Penn talk about Daniel like all girls do with their friends. Luce and Daniel are first able to interact a bit more when both of them have to do detention in the school cemetery.
The relationship that blooms between Luce and Daniel felt very organic and true. Kate never made it feel forced or like it was fake. The character development was amazing in this story.
I did see the book marketed as another Twilight, calling this book Twilight is an insult to Fallen. It was nothing like anything I have ever read before and saying it is like any other book, is calling it unoriginal. It is a very original book.
Daniel truly loves Luce and Luce truly loves Daniel. The pair make a wonderful couple.
The whole book is action-packed and Kate gives the reader a little snippet of information throughout the book and the reader can put it together like a jigsaw puzzle. The ending and the chapters just before the ending where jam packed with information and action. The twists and turns that Kate gives to the story is amazing and I never saw a few of them coming. This is going to be a four book series, the second of which Torment will be available on 28- September-2010 I would recommend this book to readers of all types.
Kate is an author to watch!

What parents need to know:
The book has some language, but not much, there is no sexual content so to speak in the book besides kissing, if one can call that sexual content.

Cover art:
The cover art is beautiful and the reason I first picked up the book, it reminded me of Amy Lee.
