Publisher Comments:

Award-winning cultural historian Iain McCalman tells the stories of Charles Darwin and his staunchest supporters: Joseph Hooker, Thomas Huxley, and Alfred Wallace. Beginning with the somber morning of April 26, 1882--the day of Darwin's funeral-- steps back and recounts the lives and scientific discoveries of each of these explorers, who campaigned passionately in the war of ideas over evolution and advanced the scope of Darwin's work.

This book describes the voyages of 4 men: Charles Darwin, Joseph Hooker, Thomas Huxley, and Alfred Wallace whose work led to the theory of Evolution. This is an exceptionally well written historical study of these men and their contribution to the theory. It keeps you riveted following the adventures of each man on their specific voyages. This is history at its best, clear, precise, captivating, entertaining, and enlightening. I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about these men, their times, and the rigors of sailing in the 1800s.
