Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The new Kay Scarpetta novel from the world's #1 bestselling crime writer.

Determined to find out what happened to her former deputy chief, Jack Fielding, murdered six months earlier, Kay Scarpetta travels to the Georgia Prison for Women, where an inmate has information not only on Fielding, but also on a string of grisly killings. The murder of an Atlanta family years ago, a young woman on death row, and the inexplicable deaths of homeless people as far away as California seem unrelated. But Scarpetta discovers connections that compel her to conclude that what she thought ended with Fielding's death and an attempt on her own life is only the beginning of something far more destructive: a terrifying terrain of conspiracy and potential terrorism on an international scale. And she is the only one who can stop it.

Review:

"The aftermath of the bloodshed in 2010's Port Mortuary figures heavily in bestseller Cornwell's solid if scattered 19th thriller featuring medical examiner Kay Scarpetta. Lured from her home in Cambridge, Mass., to Savannah, Ga., to visit Kathleen Lawler — the woman who molested Scarpetta's recently murdered colleague, Jack Fielding, as a child and later bore their daughter — at the Georgia Prison for Women, Scarpetta angrily realizes that she's been tricked. Ex-Manhattan ADA Jaime Berger wants Scarpetta's help exonerating a woman on death row for the murder nine years earlier of Savannah's Dr. Clarence Jordan and his family. What first seems like a cold case becomes terrifyingly current when fresh bodies start appearing. Scarpetta begins questioning whether the Jordan family slaying is linked to the murders in Massachusetts in Mortuary at the hands of Dawn Kincaid, the brilliant psychopath daughter of Lawler and Fielding. As in other recent work, Cornwell overloads the plot, but Scarpetta's tangled emotional state and her top-notch forensic knowledge more than compensate. Author tour. Agent: Esther Newberg at ICM." Although the book has had mixed reviews, I loved it. I'm glad that Cornwell is writing from Scarpetta's perspective again, and we're seeing the story unfold through her eyes. I didn't find the book to be boring, although I know some readers did. With all of the one hour television mysteries that wrap up neat and tidy in sixty minutes, I suppose 500+ pages is a long time to keep a reader's attention these days. What I liked about the book was the return to the former, more "normal" relationships between the characters. Kay still deals with her own insecurities, and returns to the kitchen where she sorts things out, but isn't the train wreck she's been in the last few books. Marino is back, with all of his rough edges, but as a friend and protector and part of the family again. Lucy is much less neurotic than she's been for several books. She seems to have settled back into the role of supportive/computer whiz niece from earlier books. All in all, it's not the best of Cornwell's Scarpetta books, but it seems to indicate a return to the earlier books where plots were plausible, high-drama "ratings-chasing" antics are left behind, and gives me hope that future books will give us more of that good old Scarpetta mystery.

Coastal Georgia meanders into view Patricia Cornwall style in her latest thrilling whodoneit in the Scarpetta series. She's becoming more predictable, but there are still enough surprises to keep you clicking pages to the end. A good airplane read or something to keep you disconnected from irritating relatives during the holiday season. Enjoy!
