Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

When the police tell a wealthy industrialist that her missing son has faked his own kidnapping, she hires Elvis Cole and Joe Pike-and Cole soon determines that it was no fake. The boy and his secret girlfriend have been taken, and are now lost in the gray and changing world of the professional border kidnappers who prey not only on innocent victims but also on one another-buying, selling, and stealing victims like commodities. Fortunately, the kidnappers don't yet know who the boy is, but when Cole goes undercover to try to buy the two hostages back, he himself is taken and disappears. Now it is up to Pike to retrace Cole's steps, burning through the hard and murderous world of human traffickers . . . before it is too late.

Review:

"At the start of bestseller Crais's satisfying 15th Elvis Cole novel (after 2011's The Sentry), Jack Berman, a USC dropout, and his girlfriend, Krista Morales, a star student at Loyola Marymount, get caught in a battle between human traffickers and 'bajadores' — predators who prey on other criminals — while visiting the site of an old desert plane crash near Rancho Mirage, Calif. Krista's mother, who's seen a flattering magazine story about Cole, hires Cole to find her daughter, who she suspects is pretending to be kidnapped as part of a scheme Jack cooked up to extort money so they can get married. While the tension level isn't up to Crais's usual standard, Cole and sidekicks Joe Pike and Jon Stone all get a chance to shine as Cole plays a dangerous game that makes him a prisoner of the deadly bajadore known as the Syrian. Told from multiple points of view, this installment would make a fine action-packed film with three strong male leads. Author tour. Agent: Aaron Priest, Aaron M. Priest Literary Agency." This is one of those books that starts and you just cannot put it down until, voila, the end. Elvis Cole ends up missing and Joe Pike has to find him. Enlisting the aid of Jon Stone, he is my favorite character in this story, they work around the clock before, they fear, Elvis is dead.

It all starts in the desert with two young people hiding and viewing a crime... Elvis gets hired to fnd the missing girl by her mother and the action never let's up. Smugglers and whatnot are inclusive in Taken. Has Elvis been taken by these ruthless gangsters? Jon Stone is a man who gets things done, just like Pike. But, Stone has the mile of a shark and the heart of a killer, well, one who enjoys the hunt and gets his prey where he wants them is better.

A fantastic read for a fan of mystery and action. This was the first Pike/Cole book I ever read and had to read them all afterwards. I got a hold of all the Cole/Pike books and read them all before summer!

Crais is an excellent storyteller and writer.
