Publisher Comments:

Eons ago, vampires tried to turn the dark Fae to harness their magic, only to create a demonic enemy more powerful than they could have imagined. Now, the Vampiric Fae are on the move, hunting anyone in their path. As the war with the vampires ratchets up, Myst, Queen of the Indigo Court, enshrouds New Forest in her chilling grasp.

Cicely Waters, owl shifter and Wind Witch, has rescued the Fae Prince Grieve at a great cost. Their reunion has lost them the allegiance of the Summer Queen--and the tolerance of the vampires. In desperation they turn to the Consortium for help. Now, to regain the good will of Lainule, they must dare to enter the heart of Myst's realm. But as Cicely and Grieve embark on their search for the heartstone of Summer, Winter is already wreaking her terrifying revenge.

Maybe it was because I came into this series in the middle, but I was pretty underwhelmed by this book. The plot felt fairly shaky and tentative for most of the book, like the author wasn't sure how to get the characters from where they were to where they were suppose to be at the end of the story. Likely a side effect of that problem was the uneven, jumpy pacing and tendency towards anti-climactic events. I know a lot of authors have trouble pacing a long series, and perhaps if I had already been familiar with this setting it wouldn't have been so jarring.

I liked some of the character concepts, but none of them were as fleshed out as I would have liked. Most stayed neatly in their obvious role.

The author's writing style seemed awkward, like she was trying to give her characters a "high" fantasy voice but didn't realize she couldn't mesh that with their urban setting merely by swapping out a few words with longer, more ornate ones.

I went on here looking for a new author. OMG I love the way these three books are written. I have already let my sister read them. She loved them to. If anyone is looking to fall into a book that they can't put down, read this series!

Darkling is the third in this series by Yasmine Galenorn. In the first two books we are introduced to the D'Artigo sisters who are half human/half fae. They have left their world to work "Earthside" for the Otherworld Intelligence Angency.
In Witchling the oldest sister, Camille, introduces her family and we learn of the circumstances that brought them here. Changeling is the second book, told from the perspective of the middle sister, Delilah, who is a werecat.
In this third book, Menolly, the third sister who happens to be a vampire tells her story. While each book has similar banter and wit, Galenorn does a pretty good job of giving each sister her own "voice."
As with the other books, the sisters find themselves fighting an enemy that threatens the existence of human and non-human kind.
An enjoyable adventure with plenty of "paranormal romance" thrown in.
