The true story behind the notorious international murder--updated to cover Amanda Knox's acquittal.

In Perugia, Italy, on November 2, 2007, police discovered the body of a British college student stabbed to death in her bedroom. The prosecutor alleged that the brutal murder had occurred during a drug-fueled sex game gone wrong. Her housemate, American honor student Amanda Knox, quickly became the prime suspect and soon found herself the star of a sensational international story, both vilified and eroticized by the tabloids and the Internet.

Award-winning journalist Candace Dempsey gives readers a front-row seat at the trial and reveals the real story behind the media frenzy.

"Beautifully researched, well-written, and clearly organized. Dempsey was the first journalist in the United States to raise questions about the Amanda Knox case, and the first to look deeply into the facts and begin to uncover the shocking truth. If you want to know the real story . you must read this book, reprinted after Knox's acquittal with a new ending."-Douglas Preston, New York Times bestselling author (with Mario Spezi) of The Monster of Florence

Once I picked this book up, I couldn't put it down. Previously, I had read a short booklet by Barbie Nadeau, but it completely lacked details. Since I have read a lot about this in the newspapers and blogs, I already knew the bare basics.

Dempsey takes you through the event of Nov.1st - Nov.6th in riveting detail. All the background is included also. Then we see how all the evidence is developed, and the controversial verdict comes about. While covering every aspect of the prosecution's case, we also see the heartrending plight of Amanda and her family.

If you have any interest at all on the tragic murder of Meredith Kercher, you really want to read this book. If you know nothing about the case at all, you will be reading a powerful murder mystery.

True Crime Addict, May 24, 2010 (view all comments by True Crime Addict)
This is a detailed, well-organized and nicely written true crime book by an Italian-American journalist who comes from Knox's hometown of Seattle and witnessed many of the events that played out there and in Perugia. According to the acknowledgement's page, she has relatives in several parts of Italy and has been going there for many years and numerous times during the writing of this book. She is described as an award-winning journalist who covered the case from the very beginning on her seattle pi blog and appeared on CNN. Her book captures the events through court transcripts, autopsy reports and many other documents and interviews with prosecutors as well as representatives for the defense. We also read much from the well-known Italian reporters whom Ms. Dempsey got to know in Perugia. I am still not sure how I feel about Amanda Knox. She will always be an enigma. I like the fact that this author left room for doubt and tried very hard to present both the American and the Italian point of view on the case.

Wow, it's really rude to personally attack a person for having a different opinion then you. anitaballerina was saying to get both sides just as you did. But you ranted at them personally, that's really messed up.

Review

I agree that the book was slanted in a proamanda way. It was well written though. I wish that it would have had both sides though and was weighed in a non bias light. I would say to read more books on the case as well.
