Riveting, heart rending, superb. Beyond Reach is the 6th installment in Karin Slaughter's Grant County series. My first suggestion is that you read these in order. This series builds upon itself, masterfully and with great care. The author not only compells you with electric characters, her writing is smooth, precise and she has an uncanny way of suprising and putting out excellence with every installment. In Beyond Reach, the irascible and exigent Lena Adams has been arrested. She was found injured at a crime scene where a woman was incinerated, in the back of a vehicle, located in her hometown and away from Grant County where she now works as an officer of the law. The local sherriff arrests her as she looks to be guilty of this gruesome act, and she refuses to say a word in her defense. Jefferey Tolliver, the high sheriff of Grant County, is notified that one of his officers is in the slammer for what looks like murder. As is built upon in the first 5 books of this series, the relationship between Jeffrey and Lena is deep and Jeffrey heads to Lena's aide. Meanwhile, Dr. Sarah Linton, Jefferey's wife, finds herself under the guns of a malpratice suit. A young boy under her care died of leukemia and the parents want to lay the entire blame on Sarah. Sarah is despondent and ends up going with Jefferey to aid Lena. Now, Sarah knows Lena Adams. While she feels no jealousy towards Lena, because she understands that Jefferey is more like a brother to Lena than a love interest, she knows that Lena Adams is hell on wheels. A self destructive human being, who may be an excellent officer, Lena has shown a reckless disregard for the safety of people around her. Sarah fears for Jeffrey's safety. This new situtation leads the three characters and the readers on one of the most compelling police procedurals I've read, EVER. Sarah, Jeffrey and Lena are superior characters. They jump off the pages, but it doesn't begin and end there. Each character that this author creates is vivid. I cannot even begin to illustrate how masterful Ms. Slaughter is at giving each page her best. I have read Patricia Cornwell, James Patterson, Jeffrey Deaver and so on. Believe me when I tell you, I've read them all. I can confidently say that Karin Slaughter has surpassed them all. Not only that, she cares about her readers. I can't put to fine a point on it, it is against my religion to even point at a spoiler, but this writer gave this dedication in her book Undone: "To my readers...thank you for trusting me." If you enjoy superior writing, if you enjoy a commitment to craft and if you want what I call "the good stuff", Read Karin Slaughter. Trust me. :)
