This was Charlie Stross' first novel, and it's one of the best first novels in the sci-fi genre. It's a semi-cimic romp through a universe where humanity has suffered a 'hard launch' AI singularity - the computer systems of the planet achieve sentience & in the space of a few days achieve (as Charlie puts it), 'a weakly Godlike intelligence' - and then things get REALLY weird.

There's a lot to love here, and I can guarantee Charlie has gotten better on every novel since.
