New in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Sookie Stackhouse series — the basis for HBO's True Blood!

With her knack for being in trouble's way, Sookie witnesses the firebombing of Merlotte's, the bar where she works. Since Sam Merlotte is now known to be two-natured, suspicion falls immediately on the anti-shifters in the area. Sookie suspects otherwise, but her attention is divided when she realizes that her lover Eric Northman and his "child" Pam are plotting to kill the vampire who is now their master. Gradually, Sookie is drawn into the plot — which is much more complicated than she knows...

Harris has been praised as having "navigated that trickiest of authorial turns — from 'excellent genre writer' to 'blockbuster [author] creating her own genre: contemporary light vampire-romance'" (The Dallas Morning News) and Dead Reckoning is no exception. Long-time fans of the series as well as those who have just discovered it through True Blood will not want to miss out on the latest from Charlaine Harris.

Review:

"The past, both recent and distant, comes back to haunt telepathic waitress Sookie Stackhouse in Harris's solid 12th installment (after Dead in the Family). When a firebomb hits Merlotte's bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana, Sookie wonders if the attack was directed at her shapeshifter boss, Sam. She has her hands full elsewhere, though, trying to keep the peace with her fairy kin, Claude and Dermot — who are still living at her house — and with her vampire lover, Eric Northman, who has issues of his own. Eric and his second-in-command, Pam, are chafing under the rule of Louisiana's new regent, Victor, who recently opened a vamp bar in Shreveport. As always, Sookie's blood bond with Eric connects her to the slowly brewing feud whether she likes it or not. And just when she thought the attack on Merlotte's was an isolated incident, it's revealed as the work of Sandra Pelt, the vengeful sister of Debbie Pelt, whom Sookie killed in Dead to the World. Sookie also discovers a long-lost letter from her grandmother detailing her fairy lineage along with a strange token from the fae world. Harris throws in the usual vampire fight-to-the-death, introduces a new supernatural creature and, most importantly, lays the groundwork for potential future plot twists. The Sookie Stackhouse books are fun to read. Told from first person perspective, I sometimes feel like I'm missing important information that comes from an omniscient narrator, but once I got used to her point of view, I found I enjoyed the series. The latest in the southern vampire series, Harris gives us a snapshot of life in Bon Temps and what it's like interacting with the supernatural AND humans. What makes these so enjoyable is that relationship problems exist no matter human, shifter or vampire. Oh what a relief to know that others have the same problems we do.

I enjoyed this book and the closeness of Sam and Sookie throughout. I felt like this was the second book where Sookie spent a lot of time wondering if she should cut ties with all of her supernatural associates...and nothing was decided. I did however like the look into the relationship of Sookie and Sam...it seemed like Charlaine was trying to push them together a little more. I know they both have significant others but it seemed like Sam was on the fence with his girlfriend at times, and certainly Sookie has issues with Eric, and Bill when he was in the picture a few times.
I totally enjoyed the moments with Bubba. I love every time he is in the story with Sookie.

Overall it was a good book but it was a second book where Sookie thought a lot about the way her life is going without actually figuring anything out.

Sookie books are creative and, most importantly, fun. I am very excited about reading the next installment.
